Victory!
The freedom riders experienced a lot of violence, harsh treatment, verbal abuse, and other tough obstacles, but they never gave up. In the end it payed off. Even after freedom rider Jim Zwerg was beaten senseless, he delivered a message from his hospital bed saying that he wouldn't give up no matter what, even if it meant he had to accept death. This gave everyone fighting for the cause a lot of hope.
Once the freedom riders made it to Jackson, Mississippi, many of them were arrested for "their own safety", "disturbing the peace", and other various reasons, most of them not legitimate. After this started to occur, their new strategy became to fill up the jails. They insisted on doing jail time instead of paying their fines and being released. More and more riders kept coming and filling them up. In jail, riders were treated like animals. Many were sent to Parchman Penitentiary, Mississippi prison farm commen for their brutal treatment to inmates. Rapes and murder were common. The violence and arrests are what continued to attract more and more attention. The rides continued for many months, and finally, because of the jails being filled, pressure from the Kennedy administration, and the will to win led the freedom riders to victory.
On September 22, 1961, the Interstate Commerce Commission issued regulations prohibiting segregation in interstate transit terminals.
