Besides segregation on public transportation for African Americans, there were also many other places where segregation took place in the south during this time. In these facilities, whites would either receive much better treatment and services than blacks, or there would be no facilities for blacks at all. Some examples are:
As the freedom riders participated in the rides, they had to deal with a lot of mob violence. The worst cases took place in Alabama, where their buses were set on fire and exploded, people were brutally attacked and beaten, all very near to the sheriff's office while they did nothing about it.
- Restrooms
- Hospitals
- Swimming Pools
- Parks
- Restaurants
- Schools
- Hotels
